MLB expansion to Charlotte and Salt Lake City?
I think the Toronto Blue Jays should move to Charlotte, NC. Here are the proposed cities. The two cities would be assigned to the AL. What are your opinions?
Charlotte (Carolina) - Stingers or Vipers
Utah (Salt Lake City) - Rustlers or Pioneers
Let's take a look at this and see what you've got here, and if you are right.
If we go by metro areas that clearly stand out on their own (that is, you can't argue that they could combine with another) the largest metro area with only one major professional sports team is Portland. While Portland has the population to support an MLB team, and they did push for the Expos, given the type of city and metro area that Portland is, I'm not 100% sure there is the demand necessary to field an MLB team. I actually hear both ways Also, there's really nothing in terms of corporate sponsorship that would get a stadium built (it would not be in Nike's best interest business wise to sponsor a specific stadium in that manner) and Multnomah County would NEVER pass a referendum to have a stadium built with public funds. If Portland were to land a team, and get a stadium built, it would surely not be larger than 35,000.
The next largest metro without an MLB team is Sacramento. While Sacramento tops the attendance average of all of minor league baseball, getting a stadium built for them would be tricky. They're struggling with getting a new arena for the Kings built, and may lose them (back) to Kansas City.
Next is Orlando - Baseball is failing in Florida. Too many entertainment options during the summer. Also, since all of Florida is bascially transplants, you can't build a fan base.
Next: San Antonio - it's possible, but I think San Antonio is more interested in luring the NFL than MLB.
Now comes Vegas; the largest metro area without ANY major professional teams. City officials are trying to get major professional sports to come to town, but league commissioners are still reserved. Plus, with all of Vegas' entertainment options, any sport might have trouble filling seats night after night.
Columbus, OH: Still kind of small, and half-way between Cleveland and Cincy. Would intrude on either market.
Indy - Too small to support 3 teams.
Now we come to the 2nd largest metro area without any major professional teams: Norfolk-Newport News-Virginia Beach (Hamton Roads). I think this area made a push for the Expos, which would mean they're trying to jump into the waters of major professional sports. MLB has a chance to work here since it would be the only game in town.
Then comes Charlotte. With 2 teams already, a 3rd would probably stretch Charlotte too thin. Charlotte is the 4th smallest market with more than one team already. If MLB were to relocate there, it would become the smallest 3 team market.
After that comes Austin, TX, which is chomping at the bit to draw in a major professional team. They are the 3rd largest metro area in the country without any major professional sports. Austin would welcome MLB with open arms and would support it.
There are several more metro areas without MLB that you go through before SLC (Nasville, Jacksonville, Memphis, Louisville, Richmond, VA, OKC, Hartford, CT, Buffalo and Birmingham, AL). I think SLC is just too small to support MLB.
In my opinion, there are 5 places I think would get MLB before Charlotte and SLC:
Portland, Hamton Roads, Vegas, Sacramento, Austin.
