I'm building a buggy and need a basic lightweight open differential. This will be independent suspension so i might have to cut up an axle.
The big problem is it will have to take close to a thousand horsepower, what do they use on monster trucks?
Monster trucks use 'spools'. The spool is a one piece solid connector that hooks the axles together, so that the tires on this axle have to turn exactly the same. A spool replaces the differential. The differential allows the two tires on this axle to turn at different speeds, like when you go around a corner. A spool would not allow the tires to turn at different speeds around a corner, so one of the tires would have to 'chirp' as you went around the corner. The monster trucks can use spools because the corners are dirt, not pavement, so it's easier for one of the tires to chirp. The next lower differential below a spool is a locker, like the Detroit Locker. It will allow the tires to spin at different speeds around a corner, but will resist it. Even a locker is severe for the street. If your buggy is dirt only, a locker will give you what you want. BUT, drive it on the pavement, and the locker will wear your drive tires faster then a posi differential.
