Hi! I was reading about the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, and I was curious how its AWD system affects the skid pad performance. It boasts a really sophisticated AWD system which includes an active center diff, and LSDs front and back. My assumption was all that hardware keeps it seriously glued to the pavement, but most publications put its lateral acceleration at around .8g, which is relatively terrible for a car of this type. I have read that it comes with hard, narrow tires which are to blame. But shouldn't all that AWD hardware bypass that? Are traction and lateral acceleration 2 totally independent things?
Any enlightenment on the subject is greatly appreciated!
skid pad numbers aren't really relavent in the real world. the measurement does not tell you how the car feels around corners (handling), but only the traction (grip). and, i can assure you, handling is more important than grip.
the ralliart has a very taut chassis, and a properly weighted steering wheel. and i care more about this than skid pad numbers, because these things inspire the driver to push the car harder around the corners and explore the limit of grip, as opposed to other cars (i'm thinking corvette zr1 here) which can manage over 1 g of grip, but feel terrifying around the corners because the steering offers little feedback and the seats are unsupportive.
i may have been rambling in this answer, so i'll sum up what i mean: don't let the low skid pad number put you off. test drive it around a country lane or something, and see what i mean about the handling.
