Differential Kit

Loud banging sound in rear of 99 Yukon on start and stop. What is wrong?

I had the U-joints replaced last year which solved the problem temporarily. Problem started back this summer and is getting progressively worse. Took it to the shop and they said that my U-joints were fine, but that it could be my rear differential going bad. So they checked it and said it needed to be replaced, so I paid them $800 to put in a new master rear end kit. Left the shop and the problem still persisted. The sound happens when I let completely off the brakes, it sounds like metal grinding on metal. It also happens when the truck comes to a complete stop and settles. It is very annoying and very loud. I can replace the U-joints myself, but don't want to spend the money if that won't fix the problem. Are there any other places I should check other than the u-joints and the rear diff. Like the struts, rear wheel bearing, broken leaf spring? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

i own a repair shop,,and it sounds like they didn't do something right ,because if they had ,you wouldn't still be having trouble with it,,and as new as it is you shouldn't have had the trouble you had with it,,id take it some where else and have them check it,,something wasn't done that should have been done to it,,its very possible it does have a bad wheel bearing in it,,they will go bad ,but i don't think that's it,,the noise your describing sounds like a pinion gear in the rear end housing,,or a bearing for the the ring gear,,have someone check it real close,and look a the brakes on it also,,something wasn't put back on right ,,i can tell you this much,,i been doing this for 36 yrs,,and i have never had a problem like this come back,,good luck,i hope this help,s some,

Will a mustang rear end differential fit into a vic?

i have a merc grand marquis (basicly a vic, but nicer) lol, and i wanna put some 3.73s in it. i searched ebay 4 rearend kits and i found some 8.8 mustang 3.73s. since the rear-ends are the same length, can i just get a mustang 3.73 kit? its like 150 bucks brand new.

FACT: The differential, ring & pinion, & cover can be used. The mounting bracketry is positioned (welded) differently between the two cars. So the guts from the center section, yes, but the entire axle assembly, no.
