"Half shaft" 1997 Jeep Cherokee 4WD...what is it?


I've been told I need a "half shaft" for this vehicle. What is it and what does it do?

I don't know who told you that you needed a half shaft, but obviously they don't know what they are talking about.

A half shaft is a term for a drive axle typically found on FWD cars and the like containing two CV joints.

A 1997 XJ Cherokee does not have half shafts it has a solid front axle with U-joints. I suggest that you take it somewhere else to have it looked at.

How much should it cost to fix right front half shaft for a 2001 Nissan Altima? Dealer is charging $440.00.?


I brought my car in for regular maintenance, and I'm already paying for a lot of other work when they noticed that I needs right front half shaft. Would it be better to just try to find a local garage?

I own a '91 Honda Accord, which I know isn't the same thing. However, that being stated, with many Japanese cars when the shaft is being replaced or fixed (rebooted) the engine has to be lifted. Actually this is the case with many of the engine repairs, because everything is so compact in the engine compartment.

But the cost does seem more than usual. When I had to have the right front axle replaced, front will drive, to cost $290.00 for the part and service at the dealer I take mine too. On the left side axle, they quoted 200 to have it rebooted. In other words your mostly paying for the labor, which is the same to reboot and to replace. So in my case, since the left side isn't leaking grease that bad, I opted to weight until it really needs to be replaced. I just check it each time I change the oil.

So, it really shouldn't cost that much, I would call around to other dealers and repair shops.
