flame hardening & quenching processes are done before or after gear machining?!!?


if a gear blank of AISI 1080 steel has been hot-forged, air-cooled and full anealed in preparation for machining. Is it better to do flame-hardening and quenching for the gear teeth before or after maching the gear teeth to perform surface hardening?

Also, what might be the causes for the gear to begin to deform and fails to mesh after a brief period of use?

It is better to do the hardening after machining. Hardening prior to machining would make your machining process quite difficult and the surfaces would not be "surface hardened" as you put it.

Failures can be caused by any number of issues. If there were voids or airpockets in the forging, inconsistancies in the metal, high tempuratures during use, quality control is a necessity in the production of gears.

Failures could also be caused by incorrectly sized parts. i.e. the load is greater than the capability of the material.
