Torque Start
How much torque is needed to turn the peg of a violin for tuning?
I'm working on a project and I need to tune a violin with a motor. I need to know how much torque is needed so that I can get a motor that will be able to do the job. I found on Wikipedia that the string has a tension of about 220 Newtons, but there's also the static friction that we need to overcome before we can start turning the peg.
I agree with Numbat, but there is another crucial variable. You can actually get as much friction as you want, because the pegs are tapered and go into two tapered holes of different sizes. If you don't push in on the peg while you are turning it, it will not maintain enough friction and when you let go it will just spin until the string is loose. The friction depends on how much you push in on the peg. Sometimes when the peg is pushed in too much, it seems like it will break (split) before it turns. In those cases, you turn the opposite direction (to loosen the string) just to keep from breaking the peg. The friction is usually about twice as much as the torque induced by the string so that the string will stay tuned. So to tighten the string takes nominally 3 times the string induced torque (because you are tightening against the string force), while loosening takes 1 times the string induced torque. Good luck. This is going to be a tricky machine, and the interface between the peg and the machine is likely to damage the peg if you're not careful. They're not flat, and they are not as hard as metal.
